Dark Harbor returns in October with a new haunted maze and a motley crew of morbid characters inspired by ghost stories from the Queen Mary’s haunted history.

If you can't take a full world cruise, a smaller segment can still be filled with adventure and cost a lot less. These days only a fraction of passengers are there for the long haul.

The British couple — she in a long black dress, he in a traditional tux — leaned against the elevator's polished wood paneling as they headed back to their cabin after an evening performance in the main showroom. Embarrassed at my casual clothes and running shoes, I stammered, "We decided not to dress up and went to the buffet instead of the main dining room."

The ship is posh and very British during a trip through the Panama Canal.

The rising sun peeked under red-orange clouds splayed over the Caribbean port of Cristóbal and backlighted the small armada of ships anchored there, waiting their turn at the Panama Canal. Cups of cappuccino in hand, my wife, Laurel, and I stepped out on the veranda of our cabin aboard Cunard Line's Queen Victoria, two weeks into its 2009 world cruise from Southampton, England.

The Queen Elizabeth 'maiden world voyage' from start to finish was filled with Cunard tradition, including formal dining, lectures, extensive libraries and fireworks.

I'm standing in front of the mirror in our stateroom, looking over my wife's shoulder and tying my black bow tie. It is our first sea day and the first of three formal nights on our leisurely eight-night early January crossing on Cunard Line's spanking-new Queen Elizabeth, on the way to New York from Southampton, England. The cummerbund is belted on, the studs are securely in place on shirtfront, but I've saved the neck knot for last, reminding myself of how my father first taught me how to do this on another transatlantic trip a half a century ago.

Friends have been telling my husband and me for years that we should take a cruise. When we tell them we are highly susceptible to motion sickness — a ride on a fast elevator can make us ill — they brush aside our protestations with, "But the ships are so huge; you'll never feel a thing."
