The Legoland Hotel opened in Carlsbad over the weekend -- the first Legoland Hotel in North America -- and though a pirate-themed room with skull and crossbones over the bed may not be your definition of "weekend escape," the 3,400 plastic-brick creations that master model makers crafted for the hotel will have some design fans curious to know: How did they do that?

We’re just three months into 2013, and we are bursting with theme-park developments. And this is supposed to be the slow season. Instead of waiting nine months to compile a year-in-review post, I’ve decided to make quarterly reports that update the goings-on in one swoop. OK, a drawn-out swoop, but a swoop, nonetheless.

For those who are fans of both the Star Wars franchise and the world of Lego blocks, the new Star Wars display at Legoland Florida's Miniland, in Winter Haven, is a fanciful toy universe where two very different worlds have collided. The famed characters of Star Wars --including Darth Vadar, Luke Skywalker and fan-favorite droids C-3PO and R2-D2-- welcomed about 100 guests who lined up Friday morning to be the first to see the Lego-sculpted additions to Miniland, based on the various episodes, movies and storylines of Star Wars. In addition to the Lego-block sculptures, costumed characters mingled with star-struck fans studying the intricate scenes from the six Star Wars movies.
