What's the story

The Winchesters are a happy family, until the night Mama Winchester sees a mysterious figure beside baby Sam's crib. Her screams wake up Papa Winchester, who runs into the baby's room. Sam seems to be fine – but where is that blood on his pillow coming from? Gah! It's Mama Winchester, who is mysteriously pinned to the ceiling and bleeding copiously. She bursts into flames. Papa Winchester and his two boys escape. Fast-forward 22 years – Sam is a brilliant college senior with a gorgeous girlfriend, but he never talks about his family. That's because his dad and brother Dean are hunting down things that go bump in the night. Dean appears to tell Sam their dad went missing on a "hunting trip." Sam reluctantly agrees to help Dean, but only if he's back in time for his law school interview on Monday.

The local legend

A gorgeous, scantily dressed and bedraggled woman catches the attention of a passing driver late at night. She asks him to take her home. He agrees, somewhat lecherously. But when they get to her house, it's deserted. She mournfully says she can never go home. The driver asks the woman what's going on – but she's disappeared. He goes to investigate the house, but something jumps out at him. When he runs back into the car and drives away, the woman is already there. They drive to a bridge and he dies – messily.

The investigation begins

Sam doesn't remember the night his mom died, and he's bitter that he spent his childhood learning combat techniques and making silver bullets. His opinion doesn't change when Dean reveals he's using fraudulent credit cards to finance his expedition, or that he's got a box full of fake badges in the glove compartment. Dean, pretending to be a U.S. Marshall, quizzes the local cops. They're stumped – there's no sign of the missing boy, no fingerprints in the car, and no sign of a struggle (considering the amount of blood that splashed in the car, Ghost Girl must have a hell of a cleaning service). In town, they find the missing guy's girlfriend, who tells the story of a ghostly woman who haunts the road. She was murdered, they say, and anyone who picks her up disappears.

Fact finding

The boys check the newspaper records, and find a woman did die along that stretch of road more than 20 years ago – but it was suicide, not murder. When they go to the bridge where she killed herself after her children drowned in the bath, Dean's car starts by itself and chases them over the edge. They're shaken, but unhurt. When they check into a local motel, they find the room their dad had rented. It's papered with information about mysterious occurrences, which lead Sam to believe our ghostie is a Woman in White – a woman who was betrayed by her husband, and who then kills her children in a fit of insane rage. When she comes to her senses, she kills herself, and her spirit is cursed. She spends her afterlife hunting unfaithful men. To stop her, they have to destroy her body.

The fuzz!

The police nab Dean, but Sam gets away. Dean's going to jail for impersonating an officer and fraud. The cops show Dean his dad's journal , which contains cryptic notes and also a couple of numbers. Dean refuses to say anything. They're interrupted by a 911 call – provided by Sam. Dean takes the opportunity to snag his father's journal and a police revolver, and breaks out of jail.

Ghost busting

Dean calls Sam to tell him their dad is gone – the numbers in his journal were coordinates to tell them where he'd be next. Sam tells Dean where the body is – behind the old house -- but he's interrupted by the Woman in White on the road. She ghosts herself into the car and demands to be taken home – then makes the car drive itself there. Sam tries to convince her he's not unfaithful, and therefore shouldn't be killed, but Ghost Girl swears he will be, and makes out with him. Apparently that's enough for her, and she starts to rip his heart out of his chest. Dean arrives and shoots at Ghost Girl. This gives Sam enough time to slam the car into gear and drive it into the house. Ghost Girl is home now – and her kids have been waiting for her. The guys watch in horror as the kids drag her away to the underworld.

The aftermath

Dean figures out where their dad is, but Sam wants to go home and get his normal life back. Dean reluctantly agrees to take him back. At the apartment, flops down on the bed to rest. But where is the blood dripping on his forehead coming from? Gah! It's the girlfriend, who, like Mama Winchester, is pinned to the ceiling and bleeding copiously. She bursts into flames. Dean drags Sam out of the house. As the house burns, Sam announces he's ready to join the family business.
