The mystery
Lori, a gorgeous but somewhat prudish sorority girl and preacher's kid, goes out on a date with frat boy Rich. Just as he's getting a bit too grabby, the couple is interrupted by the shriek of someone dragging a metal hook across a road sign. Rich gets out to investigate, and sees an invisible force carve into his truck. He disappears. Lori locks the doors and cowers in the truck until the noise subsides to a scraping on the roof. She gets out and sees the bloodied body of the frat boy hanging upside down over the truck.
Hunting
At Frat Boy's funeral, Lori makes eyes at Sam while her father conducts the ceremony. Afterwards, Lori's roommate urges her to blow off dinner with dad so they can do just-us-girl's tequila shots. Sam and Lori bond over witnessing horrific events. The guys think the murder sounds like the famous Hook Man, but with the added bonus of him being a spirit. They find a case from the area in 1862 – a local preacher with a hook for a hand went on a murderous rampage through the red-light district.
The second victim
Lori's dad drives her back to the sorority house after dinner, then lectures her on the immorality inherent in such places. Lori dismisses him – I'm an adult, and I can take care of myself! When she gets upstairs, the light is out and her roommate is in bed. Meanwhile, Sam and Dean stake out the sorority house with a shotgun full of spirit-repelling rock salt. They're caught by the sheriff. After a night in jail, Dean convinces the sheriff that Sam is a pledge getting hazed for hell week. When Lori wakes up, she finds her roommate very dead. Written in blood on the wall: "Aren't you glad you didn't turn on the light?"
Seeking
Lori's dad convinces the sheriff to let him take her home, even though she's tied to two murders now. The guys sneak into her room and see the writing on the wall. They also see the symbol that was on the murderous preacher's hook. Looks like they've got their ghost. Now they have to find the body and salt and burn the bones to banish the spirit. They also figure out that the spirit is tied to Lori's father -- possibly summoned by his repressed desire to protect his daughter from sin.
The third victim
Sam watches Lori and her father fight at home while Dean searches for the murderous preacher's unnamed (but marked with his symbol) grave. He digs it up and destroys the bones. Lori comes out to talk to Sam, telling him that her dad is a hypocrite who's having an affair with a married woman in the church. She was raised to believe sin should be punished, and now her father is sinning? While Sam ponders that, Lori decides it's a good time to make out. Sam reluctantly pushes her away. Lori's father comes to the door to call her inside. The Hook Man appears behind him and drags him back. Sam drives the spirit off with the salty shotgun, but the preacher is wounded. Looks like Hook Man is attached to Lori, not her father.
The guilty party
Sam is furious Dean didn't burn the body. But I did! Dean protests. The bones are toast! What about the hook itself? Sam asks. The guys find out the hook was donated to the church where Lori's father preaches, and that it was melted down and fashioned into something else. They break into the house and church, gather everything even remotely silver, and throw it in the furnace. While they're melting, they hear a noise from the church. It's Lori, praying for forgiveness. Sam tries to talk to her. Lori is inconsolable -- she's the one who should be punished, not the Hook Man's victims! That sentiment summons Hook Man himself, who comes after Lori. Sam defends her, and gets cut. Dean drives the spirit off with the shotgun. Sam notices Lori's necklace – it's a church heirloom, and yes, it's silver. Sam rips it off and throws it to Dean, who takes it down to the furnace. The invisible Hook Man starts carving up the walls, and looks set to finally kill Lori when the silver melts. Hook Man disintegrates.
The aftermath
Lori thanks Sam for saving her and her father's life. He reluctantly leaves her and gets in the car. Dean says they can stay, but Sam stoically indicates they should hit the road – to keep looking for their father, to find what killed Jessica, and to banish as many beasties as possible.
