With a family of six you would need either an SUV or a minivan, and we recommend the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna as great choices in those categories.

The only 2013 passenger cars that can seat six are the Chevrolet Impala and Mercedes-Benz E350 wagon, and neither is ideal. In the Impala, we wouldn't wish the cramped middle position of either the front or rear seat even on munchkins. The E350 wagon has two rear-facing jump seats that are too small for adults, and if you use them, you lose most of your cargo space. Moreover, the Mercedes wagon starts at nearly $58,000.

The Odyssey, on the other hand, seats up to eight and has ample cargo space, so it should remain a viable choice as your brood grows. Cars.com's editors chose the Odyssey as the Best New Car for Big Families.

The Sienna, a minivan that also should provide the room you need for years to come, was voted the 2013 Best Deal for Big Families because of its seven-seat capacity and generous number of standard features at an attractive price. Base prices on the 2013 Sienna now start at $27,30, including an $845 destination charge, because a V-6 engine is now standard instead of a four-cylinder, but it remains a good value for families on a budget.
