What is the correct cargo space for the 2012 Mazda5? The Mazda website reports 44.4 cubic feet when the third row is folded while other websites say 27.5 cubic feet.
Mazda says the only cargo volume figure it has issued for the Mazda5 mini-minivan is 44.4 cubic feet, and that is with the third row folded.
We can't name names, but Mazda officials at some point told us that the Mazda5 has 11.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row and 89.3 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded. When we asked this time, however, Mazda insisted the only valid capacity for the Mazda5 is 44.4 cubic feet, measured under standards set by the Society of Automotive Engineers.
We, too, have seen other cargo volume numbers tossed about and used some in previous Cars.com reviews. Mazda, though, says those numbers are derived under a European measuring standard that is different from the SAE standard used to calculate 44.4 cubic feet.
We wish we could be more specific, but all we can say for sure is that cargo volume will be greater than 44.4 cubic feet with both the second and third rows folded and less than that with the third seat up.
