The latest beneficiary of Washington State Patrol Troopers helping out animals in trouble is a seagull from Bellingham.
Trooper Bart Maupin was responding to reports of a large bird in the road on I-5 near the Canadian border on July 30 when he found the bird in the middle of the interstate with what appeared to be a broken wing, WSP spokesperson Keith Leary said.
“Trooper Maupin gave assistance to the seagull, removing [it] from the road and placing it in the rear of his patrol car where he transported it to the Northwest Wildlife rehabilitation center in Deming, Wash.,” Leary said.
Leary added that the seagull got a first-hand glimpse at law enforcement in action some excitement when Maupin responded to a request to assist another trooper in capturing a fleeing suspect. After the suspect was in custody, the bird was taken to the rescue center.
