NASA's space shuttles in film

With Endeavour in Los Angeles, let's take a look at the roles the space shuttle has played on the big screen. (Spoiler alert: major plot points ahead!)

<b>Launch date:</b> 1979
<br><br>
<b>Pilot:</b> James Bond (portrayed by Roger Moore) gets to fly one of the seven space shuttles shown in the film.
<br><br>
<b>Shuttle mission:</b> Villain Hugo Drax develops a toxin that will destroy all human life on Earth. He launches six shuttles to transport dozens of genetically perfect specimens to his secret space station, where they are to wait until it's safe to go back to Earth and breed a "new master race." The U.S. launches its own shuttle to intervene.
<br><br>
<b>Outcome:</b> After a laser-gun-filled space battle, Bond defeats Drax, pushing him out an airlock. The charismatic agent escapes the disintegrating space station with attractive astronaut Holly Goodhead. The pair head back to Earth, enjoying weightless diversions and double entendres on their way.
