Haunted house attractions in Maryland and surrounding areas [Pictures]

Every fall, haunted attractions rise from the dead after a year-long rest. And each year, haunted houses, hayrides and trails find a new and creepier way to scare Baltimoreans.

Looking for historic hauntings? Check out the dungeons at Fort Howard. Don't want to spend an arm and a leg? Try Cox's Point Haunted Mansion in Essex. Want to be so scared that sleeping hardly seems an option? Visit Terror Behind the Walls at Eastern State Penitentiary.

Check out our top picks for area haunted attractions, before they return to their graves.

Highlights: Bedlam in the Boro updated its haunted house and hayride for this season. The hayride is three miles, with a tour through a butcher room featuring a mad pig and other vile characters. The haunted house has been updated with five new terrifying rooms. John Frock, a member of the Bedlam in the Boro committee, said he has seen great reactions to this year's additions. "A lot of people get scared, so we must be doing our job right," he said. The haunted attraction supports the Lineboro Volunteer Fire Department.
